Starting in 2005 this series of paperbacks replaced the venerable Digest series.
The Hardy Boys have been drafted by A.T.A.C (American Teens Against Crime), a top-secret government agency, founded in part by their father, Fenton. The first copies of volumes 1-4 hit the bookstores in mid-April 2005. Volume 1 had an introductory price of $1.99 which was raised to same same price of the other volumes ($4.99) on subsequent printings. The stories are told in first person style with Frank & Joe alternating chapters. Each story begins at the climax of an undescribed mystery then segues into the Boys getting their latest "mission". In 2005, Armada (UK) reprinted some Casefiles as part of the Undercover Brothers series. This was not done for the US editions. In 2008, the cover format was changed starting with #22 Deprivation House. Cover Design:

After the 1979 court battle in which Grosset & Dunlap lost the rights to publish any new Hardy Boys tales, Simon & Schuster started publishing new stories in paperback format, first under the Wanderer imprint (volumes 59-85) and then under the Minstrel imprint. Beginning with volume 171, The Test Case, in January 2002, new Digests were released under Simon & Schuster's Alladin imprint, with some older volumes being reprinted under this imprint. The Digest series ended in 2005 and was replaced by The Hardy Boys: Undercover Brothers The 27 Wanderer volumes were also issued in hardcover with a dust jacket using the same basic art as the paperbacks. Each volume used a different color cloth binding. These books (especially the later volumes) are very difficult to locate, particularly those which have not seen library usage. The stories themselves continued along the same lines as the first 58 tales although the Digests are generally shorter. All the regular characters from the original series show up here also. That this series was meant to be viewed as a continuation of the original series is demonstrated by the fact that the book numbering starts with #59 instead of #1 and that early editions of the last Grosset & Dunlap book, The Sting Of The Scorpion, contained a plug for Night Of The Werewolf as the next volume. After a slow start in 1979-1980, Simon & Schuster began releasing six new titles every year. This slowed down to three volumes per year in 1984-1985 and stopped all together in 1986. In late 1987 the series resumed and from that time (except for 2000), Simon & Schuster continued to release a new volume every other month until the series was discontinued in 2005. In 1979, Scholastic Books released a paperback edition of volume 59, Night Of The Werewolf, with a slightly modified cover and title page. Starting in 1980, several different boxed Gift Sets containing three to five volumes were offered. The art on the gift box was usually taken from one of the books contained therein, however this is not always the case and sealed gift sets using the same art but containing different volumes have been seen. A spoken version of volume 64, Mystery Of Smugglers Cove, was released in a boxed two tape set by the Cassette Book Company in 1985. Volume 95, Danger On The Air, was also released in a hardbound picture cover edition as part of the Weekly Reader Just For Boys series in 1989. Volume 100, The Secret Of The Island Treasure, was in print for a very short period and is difficult to locate. My research indicates that it went through three printings, the last for inclusion in a boxed gift set with #'s 99, 101 & 102. Volume 143, The Giant Rat of Sumatra, adopted it's name from an "untold" tale mentioned in several of the famous Sherlock Holmes mysteries by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Hardcover rebindings, primarily for library use, made by Demco and others have been observed. Many of the Digests in were published in Great Britain in paperback by Armada and in hardbound picture cover editions by Angus & Robertson. After the demise of the Casefiles series, some unused manuscripts from that series were recycled for use in the Digest series. Starting with Volume #166 Past And Present Danger, some new Digests released as e-books (downloadable text designed to be read by special software) as well as in the traditional paperback format. To celebrate the Hardys' 75th anniversary in 2002, Simon & Schuster released a "Collector's Edition" which contains The Caribbean Cruise Caper (#154); DareDevils (#159); Skin And Bones (#164) Starting in 2005 Grosset & Dunlap began reprinting hardcover editions of the Digests using slightly modified art from the original Wanderer editions. The Casefiles were aimed at early-to-mid teen readers and had more mature, espionage based themes. The new direction the series would take was promptly illustrated in the first volume, Dead On Target. A bomb planted in the Boys car blows Joe's longtime girlfriend, Iola Morton, to smithereens in the first chapter. Oddly enough, Iola remained alive and well in the Digests, thereby creating two different Hardy "worlds".
At times working with the mysterious Gray Man and his shadowy spy organization combating the forces of the Assassins, an evil international criminal organization, the Boys were now fighting far more serious crime, traveling undercover throughout the country and around the world.
In general, there is more action and much more violence in this series than as is in either the Digest or the original series. Both the Hardys show far more interest in the opposite sex, especially Joe, who apparently overcame his grief and became quite the little skirt chaser.
Simon & Schuster released the first two Casefiles under their Archway imprint in April 1987 and continued to release a new title monthly until November 1997. In January 1998 the last Casefile, #127 Dead In The Water, was released. At this time, no new Casefile stories are planned, however, nine of the old stories were reprinted in three Collector's Edition books.
The titles are now out of print and existing warehouse stocks are being used up, so many of the books are becoming difficult to locate. The Casefiles, along with the other Hardy Boys paperback series, could well become the Hardy collectibles of the future.
In an effort to promote the new series, Simon & Schuster gave away a 64 page paperback sampler containing chapters from the first four Casefiles in 1987.
In 1988, the first ten titles were also published in large-type PC hardcovers by Grey Castle Press, some of which were bound into library editions by Gareth Stevens Publishing. The Stevens volumes have heavier, more thickly laminated covers and have a "GS" logo on the spine over the Grey Castle logo. All these volumes are quite difficult to find, particularly Stevens volumes which have not seen library usage. Also in the late 1980's, volumes 7 Deathgame and 33 Collision Course were released in hardbound picture cover editions as part of the Weekly Reader Just For Boys series.
None of the books have internal illustrations.
The first 66 volumes had yellow page edging, after that the edges were plain. Some variations of the back cover where the white box for the bar code number has been left blank have been observed. Some volumes were reissued with different ISBN numbers.
Volumes 64-66 form the Operation Phoenix trilogy.
Volumes 76-78 form the Ring Of Evil trilogy.
Several different Gift Sets were offered, usually containing 5 Casefiles or 4 Casefiles & 1 Nancy Drew-Hardy Boys Supermystery.
Hardcover rebindings, primarily for library use, made by Demco and others have been observed.
As of September 2003, Armada (UK) continues to publish the existing Casefiles in Great Britain. Their editions used either modified U.S. or a completely new cover art. Several 2 In 1 and 3 In 1 editions were also released.
In late 2005 Simon & Schuster released the "Collector's Edition" volume 2 in a hardcover with a "Digest" style cover featuring modified art from Digest #152 Danger In The Extreme
Starting in 2005, Armada (UK) reprinted some Casefiles as part of the Undercover Brothers series.
Cover Art: Morgan Kane (1-2), Brian Kotsky (3-104), John Youssi (122-127)
Photographs of the stars of the 1995 Hardy Boys TV show graced the covers of Casefiles 105-121.

When Simon & Schuster took over the publishing of all new Hardy Boys stories in 1979, all new books were released under their Wanderer Books imprint. Starting in late 1986 all books then being produced under the Wanderer imprint were reissued under the Minstrel Books imprint. All the Digests then in print received new cover art and volume 68 The Submarine Caper was retitled Deadly Chase.
Wanderer published Digest volumes 59 Night Of The Werewolf through 85 The Skyfire Puzzle and A Hardy Boys Handbook: Seven Stories Of Survival in paperback as well as in hardcover with dustjackets. The hardcover books, especially the later volumes, are difficult to locate and Seven Stories Of Survival is almost impossible to find. Most were sold to be library copies and pristine copies are scarce.
Wanderer released the only editions of Camp Fire Stories and Super Sleuths and the early editions of Ghost Stories. Since they produced hardcover editions until 1985, it's possible that these volumes may have been issued in that format although I have not seen any examples.
